Chapter Thirteen

Mrs. Leary opened the letter, postmarked Atlanta, Georgia. So that’s where she is, she thought. Jeannie Leary had been well aware of the goings on at the Mingledorff home all these years, though Sarah Jane had never said anything about it. The word at church was that Sarah Jane had ‘abandoned her poor father, leaving him with a sick wife and two little sisters.’

That did not sound like Sarah Jane Jeannie knew; Sarah Jane had shown up over the years with tell-tale bruises that told a different story about ‘poor Lester Mingledorff.’

She opened the envelope and pulled out the notebook page.

Dear Mrs. Leary,

I can imagine what they are saying at church about me leaving. I'll say that I had to and let it go at that. I am worried about my little sisters and my mother as well. I plan to get them as soon as I am financially able.

In the meantime, if it isn’t asking too much, I would appreciate it if you let me know, from time to time, how they are getting along. I feel bad asking you, but I know you are a true Christian woman and, likely, the only friend I have there.

You can contact me here at the YWCA. Please don’t let anyone know where I am.

Love,

Sarah Mingledorff

Mrs. Leary looked at the YWCA address on the envelope and walked over to her chair by the window. She sat for a while, staring out at the now-empty Mingledorff house down the road and a memory of the hardworking ten-year-old pulling weeds in the hot summer sun.

I guess this is God’s will, she sighed. Now that she’s contacted me, I’ll have to tell her.
